Among the pagan Norsemen, jewellery and adornments were taken very seriously and used as amulets or talismans for their powerful meanings. For instance, Thor's Hammer, known as Mjöllnir, was held in as much awe as Christ's cross has since been revered by Christians.
The Norsemen carved Thor's Hammer onto their gravestones and was suspended in their temples as wood carvings or wrought iron. Under the symbol of the Hammer, Thor was the deity who made marriages fruitful and also god of the hearth and fire.
Also known as Donar (the Thunderer) from the Germanic "der Donnerer", Thor dwelt in the vault of heaven, the god of thunder and lightning. Mjöllnir, Thor's Hammer, would be able to strike as firmly as he wanted, whatever his aim, the hammer would never fail, if he threw it at something, it would never miss and never fly so far from his hand that it would not find its way back, and when he wanted, it would be so small that it could be carried inside his tunic.
