Celtic artists worked with stone, wood, metal and paint. The style is vibrant and complex with knot works, spirals and interlacings. Born of the druid religion and the oral traditions of the celtic people, well prior to the advent of Christianity, the Celtic carvings on stone monuments were used in druidic ceremonies for magical purposes, such as warding off evil. Fine Celtic jewellery adorned Celtic warriors along with their chariots and horses.

The Celtic people believed that no being should be represented exactly in art, so many Celtic representations of people and animals were highly stylised. In the same way, the Celts believed that there was a supreme God who was perfect, therefore a Celtic artist would deliberately leave parts unfinished so that nothing could be seen as more perfect than God. Many taking on zoomorphic forms.

Celtic knot designs with their unbroken lines are a symbol of man's eternal growth, an aid to concentration to occupy the mind with a repetitive task so that through contemplation you can reach the very heart of your nature.
